We got a nice email from Tim O’Donovan this morning. I thought I’d post it out there to keep you up to date with his ventures.

While you’re there, thought I’d send you a little update on my VO activities for your news section - feel free to use/discard as you wish.

I’ve been quite busy over this past month or so, with demos for 3 Mobile and An Post, and tv and radio slots recorded for Bulmers Berry, Texaco, National College of Ireland and the Guinness Arthur’s Day Campaign.

Also gearing up to release my second album as Neosupervital at the end of the Summer (www.listn.to/neosupervital), which is available for licensing for any ad campaigns that might require fun, vibrant pop music or instrumentals.

(By the way, if you ever hear of folks needing music for their campaigns, do let me know. I’m hoping to tie in that side of things with my vo work - seems to be a logical progression.)

My stats have been very healthy over the past while - thanks again for a great service and keep up the good work!

Dominique Monot recently finished producing his own short film, The Companion. Dom has been a regular on Piehole for a number of years now. As you might tell from his name, and his accent, he is not from these parts and you can definitly see the Gaelic influence in this work. He touches on a number of hot topics that the irish aren’t used to facing up to. Dom takes some time to answer some questions about the film and Irish Society in general below.

The film deals with infedelity - something that there is a more liberal attitude towards in your native France. Do you think the Irish are a little hypocritical in this regard?

I think there is a certain chauvinism and hypocrisy in Ireland when it comes to talk about relationships in general and sexuality. Also, there is still a lot of discrimination and intolerance when same sex relationship discussion is brought up. The same when 2 people with a big age difference fall in love with each other, there is always someone to find it strange and disgusting. You hear things like; “Look at him, he’s to old for her” or vice et versa.

I feel there is a lake of education and awareness among the population about the all thing. Without being to judgmental and pointing my fingers on someone, I would say that somehow the roman catholic church and the Irish government have some questions to answer about this matter. I hope, one day, people will stop focusing on stupid things and focus more on looking at their own self and get on with their life, stop criticizing each others and start taking care and respect one another a little bit more. You know what I mean. Also, infidelity as surely always existed, it is not a French thing really. Anywhere in the world you hear stories about infidelity, not only French have mistresses or little flings around every so often. It’s seems to be a human thing. We’re animal after all, some more than others, that’s it! Oulala hahaha!!!

From a Froggy point of you, oops! From a French point of vue, yes we are more open minded at this level, i think. It does not make us better people thou! but at least we’re able to share and talk more about our own issues. For me, good communication is important when two people find each other and if they aren’t able to talk about the way they feel, about one another, well, I think there is a problem somewhere. Like my good friend Ken Bruen would say” If I have something in my mind that bothers me, I prefer to talk about it” and he’s right because on the moment you might be very nervous or find it hard to speak but then, when things are said and time goes by there is a sort of “soulagement” within you. If you see what I mean and somehow you feel better after that. Can I add, that in extreme situations of infidelity usually it’s because there is no more love, what I would say about that it’s one of the hardest thing in the world is to say to someone: ” Look, I don’t love you anymore”, “I’m not in love with you anymore”, I’m seeing someone? so because we can’t say it or we think we can’t, well we turn our back, start pretending things et Badaboum! You know the rest. In the short you will see our couple reconciliating but what did it take to get there…

How do you intend to promote the film here and abroad?

Our first short, “The companion” portrays our middle age couple having doubts about each other and having their own way to sort their problem. When It all comes out, it’s hard but trust and confidence re emerged after that and the games stop. Letting the audience absorbing so much in such a short time. I think Oisin Mac coille, who co-produced with me and directed the film, did a great job and we did well with our editor Eoghan Synnott in putting it together. It’s a tough subject to work with. The story is very contemporain and hopefully audiences will see through it and enjoy it the way it is. Everyone working with us and helping us are fantastic people, creatives and want to make things happen, we are hoping to be selected for film festivals in Ireland and abroad.

We are trying to gather all the names of festivals here and abroad at the moment and we’ll try to apply to them as much as we can. I will contact IFTN and IFTA to see how they can help us as well. Internet word of mouth also. I’ll be honest we are not well organized with promo and things like that yet but we’ll get there.

Where did the inspiration for the storyline come from?

About where the story line comes from the Writer Barry Graham said: It is an original idea and he wanted to portay the lenght of how an average middle age couple would go to keep intimacy in their life?

E-learning is a growing part of a professional voiceover’s repertoire. Siobhan Wells from Skillsoft has been using Piehole to source voices recently and she kindly agreed to answer a few questions about e-learning, what makes for a good VO and how to prepare yourself to get more of this type of work.

What is ‘e-learning’?

e-learning is learning (training) presented electronically rather than in person or in a classroom.

What type of customers does Skillsoft have?

Our typical customers are employees of medium to large corporations (main market is the US) who have access to sections of the SkillSoft library of Business Skills and IT courseware relevant to their jobs and business.

Can you give an example of a typical piece of work to be produced?

Here are a few paragraphs from an Ms Office course:

Conversations, a new feature in Outlook 2010, is an automatic grouping of a string of messages, consisting of an initial e-mail and its subsequent responses. A conversation is indicated by a small white arrow to the left of the original e-mail’s subject line. You can click this arrow to expand the conversation thread. Clicking the arrow again will collapse the thread.

You can manage conversations in various ways. You can ignore a conversation thread using the Ignore button on the Home tab.

This means the conversation is moved to the Deleted folder, and all future replies to the message will not be sent to you.

You can also file away conversations by using the Move button to move them to a different folder.

What would be your ideal voiceover to work with?

Someone who also has the ability to read an unseen script with minimal re-takes and sound completely natural - like they just are having a conversation.

Do you there will be more e-learning work to be produced in the coming years?

Yes, but whether any work we have will be for American or other accents is hard to tell. At the moment the bulk of our work is for American voiceovers, but there has been a growing trend towards using non-American, English-speaking VO’s . (I should note though, that we have enough VOs on our books for current requirements.)

Do you prefer to work with someone in studio, or online?

We do both. For remote VO’s once their technical setup is of a high enough standard and we can listen in to sessions as required, that’s fine with us.

Do you have a favorite voiceover to work with?

Now that would be telling J

How can our voiceovers best market themselves to get more e-learning VO work?

Include e-learning as part of your demo, but without a backing track.

STEP 1: GET A SCRIPT

First, you need to figure out what goes in the script. You need to figure out - what is the one message that you want customers to remember from your radio ad? Bear in mind that people listening to the radio ad are often driving or cleaning the house or doing something else while they’re listening to the radio. It is not a captive audience. So you need something that someone can easily remember. Don’t be tempted to put too many facts and benefits of your product into your radio script. The simpler the better. What is the ONE thing you want to say about your product? Is it that there’s a half price sale on? Is it that you have great service? It can’t be both.

Once you’ve figured out what that one thing is, you need to dramatise it in the most memorable and interesting way possible. Think of all the drivel you hear on the radio. Your ad will be nestled in between a bunch of those other ads. You need to make your ad stand out from the crowd.

It has to be punchy, entertaining and creative. Don’t bother with the long phone numbers. If you have a web address you’d like people to go to, make it easy to remember and to spell.
If you’d like your ad to really stand out from the crowd, it’s best to source a professional freelance copywriter to write your script. You can do this buy googling “copywriter” or checking out Linked-In or Elance. Make sure when you brief them, to explain to them the ONE thing you want people to know about your product.

STEP 2: PRODUCE YOUR SCRIPT

Once you’ve got your script finalised, there are a few options available to you. You can contact a sound studio directly to produce your script (there’s a list of great Irish sound studios in our E-book). Their rates tend to be between €150 and €250 per hour. A 30 second radio ad shouldn’t take more than an hour to produce. They can advise you on which voiceovers to use, and they’ll sort it all our for you. The standard Equity voiceover rates are between €140 - €500 depending on which stations your ad is airing on. (For full rate card, you can download our ebook here).
If you like to be more hands-on, you can also manage the process yourself. You can source your own voiceovers online. We’ll arrange phone auditions, so you hear samples in advance of your script. Once you’ve chosen a voiceover, you can then approach a sound studio with your script and chosen voiceover/s.

The 3rd, easiest option is to get Piehole to do the whole shebang for you. We’ll arrange sound studios and voices for you. Here’s more info.

STEP 3: GO TO AIR

If you’ve already got media space booked, that’s great. You or the sound studio can simply email the final mp3 file to the station.

If you haven’t, you need to figure out what station to use. You don’t always need to go for the big breakfast slot on the massive national radio station. Sometimes your money will go further on a selection of smaller radio stations. Each slot on the radio station has a different audience, so be careful where you book. For example, if you are targeting house wives, there’s no need to buy the expensive “drive time” slots, because if you wait an hour or two, you can still reach the same housewives, but at cheaper rates. Ask the radio station to provide you with information regarding each of their shows and who listens to them. Then you’re able to make a more informed decision.

Relatively speaking, the production of the radio ad is very cheap in comparison to the cost of the media space. That’s why you need to stand out on air. What’s the point in spending so much money on media space - and then nobody listens or cares about your ad?

Dublin based, Igloo Animation, recently launched a new service aimed at Dublin businesses. They create short explanatory animations, illustrating how products and services work. Of course, all this means more work for voiceovers. Good stuff. Trevor answered a few questions for our blog and here is what he had to say about getting voiceover work for animations.

Who the hell is Igloo Animations anyway?
Igloo Animations is an award winning animation studio
set up in the digital hub in Dublin8

What sort of clients do you have?
Igloo’s clients range from large corporate companies to small businesses

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Ted.com and Movies, Music, People that make a difference

Where do you normally find to people to voice your animations?
It depends, sometimes it could be someone that you live with
and other times you have to cast actors for different roles
and find them through casting agencies.

Do you have a favorite VO?
No, nor do I really have a favorite screen actor. I have seen even great
actors cast wrongly and it’s hard to look at when that happens. Sometimes an actor that you would never rate highly can get cast into a role that they fit perfectly and then your opinion changes, so you never know

What advice would you give to a voice over looking to do more animation work?
Get VO samples online at casting agencies etc… so that people can have a basic idea of what to expect of you before you come in.

You have recently started doing special ‘explanatory’ animations for products on services. Have you any idea how much more effective (if at all) they are over plain old text?

Yea, It’s way more effective, well for people that want visuals like me anyway. Would you prefer to read about a movie in ?plain old text? or would you prefer to see the trailer? A picture can say a thousand words

What sort of budget do I need to get one of these short animations made?
2,500 euro’s

What better way to see what this is all about than heading over to their website where you can a short version of NAMA, Sustainability and even FL Financial Services (whatever that is).

In other news, Nicola has been keeping very busy. She was in the first episode of RTE Storyland’s Zombie Bashers… As well as 4 other short films in the last 3 months, playing the lead in all of them. She was also featured in the Bord Failte ad that’s running at the moment on the telly and in cinemas. Plus she’s just done a shoot for an ad for Fine Gael!

If I told you that you get voiceovers out there in the world charging €20 for doing a radio ad, would you believe me? It’s crazy, but true. Many voiceovers totally undervalue themselves in the hope of securing the gig. And many other voice overs simply don’t know what to charge.

Our advice

Our advice to voice overs is always: when quoting a job… STICK TO THE RATE CARD. It’s there for a reason. That’s what IAPI considers a fair wage to artists, and the rate card is put in place so that voiceovers don’t get ripped off. Don’t undercut your fellow VOs, because that will create an industry where lots of people are earning no money. If you tell people, “my quote is €x, I just charge the standard IAPI rates”, they’ll understand and won’t want to be seen ripping off struggling artists.

Why IAPI rates are fair

People think that voiceover work is very well paid. Yes it is, in a way, but that is taken out of context. Think of all you have to do to be a voiceover artist:

- training (a few thousand euro)

- a good demo (€300)

- professional headshots (€150)

- piehole subscription (€145 - €500)

- you might have invested in a home studio (€5000 + for a decent one)

- perhaps agent’s commission (up to 20%)

- tons of time/effort self-marking

- you have to be available during the day at a moment’s notice (which means you can’t have a stable day job… this is a huge commitment and probably the biggest sacrifice a VO makes)

So yes, it is nice getting a TV job worth €800, and getting it done in less than an hour. But you’ve earned it.

We basically spent the last few months working our little white hineys off to get the site spiffy for Dragons Den. What a hoot it has been. Dragon Gavin Duffy, has a good blog and writes every week about the show. He’s kind of got our number in terms of doing Dragons Den in order to get publicity for the site. We knew that only some people got a feature slot on Dragons Den which is 8 minutes long, while others had to make do with 30 seconds. So we knew we had to do something that stood out. I did wear that crazy dress for the publicity. But… we would’ve loved an investment also. Especially from Sean. James loves him because he plays Judo, and me because he’s always making inappropriate jokes.

Filming the show was nerve-wrecking but fun. It was done in January, when all the snow storms were hitting Dublin. The thing that didn’t really come across on the final show was the vibe in the Den. I thought the Dragons were great craic, and they were definitely friendlier and cooler in real life as what they come across on the telly. In the end, after nearly 1.5 hours of questioning we got our offers in. €20k for 50% of the business from Sarah, and €15k for 40% from Sean. The Dragons are shrewd investors. But so are we…. And as my native Saffers would say, nought brew. If I were watching the show and saw somebody else take that same offer, I would be shouting at the telly going “don’t be crazy!! say no say no!!”.

I do love P. She is great. But sometimes she gets us in a whole lot of trouble. Take for example, early one August morning, when she gleefully informed me that we had been entered as contestants on the infamous Dragon’s Den program.

I was not in favour. The Dragon’s are famous for ripping hapless entrepreneurs to pieces in front of a nationwide audience. There was no way I’d be up for that.

However. I do love her - and she is persuasive. Here are a few of the reasons why it would be a good thing to do.

Over half a million people watch the show. More importantly - pretty much all of adland Ireland watches it. There would never be a better chance to get our talent front and centre of so many eyeballs.

Thousands of small business owners watch the show. They produce tens of thousands of pieces of advertising every year and many of those go on radio or TV - not to mention podcasts, audio-books etc etc. Going on the box would mean they would know where to come when they needed voice talent for their promotions.

It would be a hoot.

I love hoots. They are great craic. And its true that we owe it to you guys to get the most profile possible for you.

So this Thursday night we are setting forth onto the airwaves. Wish us luck and tune in.

Brief videos explaining how to use a web-site or web-app are all the rage. I like it. It’s an engaging way to tell people how to use your service without them having to dig through explanations. Its just a shame that most of these video’s don’t go the extra mile and pay attention to the sound.

It is a bit of a bug bear of mine - but there is nothing worse than watching a grainy vimeo video where I can’t hear what instructions being mouthed by the demonstrator. If they knew how easy it was to get a voicover to mix in decent audio, perhaps more people would do it.

So here is how it works.

Find a voice-over for your gig. You can search for Irish, UK and Canadian talent. FYI: the Canadians sound just like yanks so you can hire them if you are targeting that market.
For a small job like this, you are looking for someone with a home studio. We can help advise on this front.

Get a portion of your script together and post it via our online auditions.

The results come in pretty quickly, and once you have someone you like, hire them.

They’ll send back a mp3 which you can lay over your video. Some of them will be able to mix the video for you also.

And that is it. It won’t cost a bomb but it’ll make the world of difference when it comes to how likely your users are to actually stay and figure out how that website actually works.

There’s a new agency in town, Boys and Girls. They are fun, we like them. Here is a wee interview to get to know them better.

So what’s the deal with Boys & Girls?
To put it simply, 4 boys and 2 girls got together. One thing lead to another and next thing we knew we were the proud parents of an agency. A very talented, creative agency at that. We’re so proud.

When did you start and how’s it going for you?
We opened our doors last November and we’ve been delighted with the response so far. We’ve won a number of great accounts and were pitching almost every week.

What’s your background/history?
We’ve each been in advertising for a fair chunk of time (over 85 years when added collectively) and have worked in most of the big agencies in town. Which in turn means we’ve worked on most of the leading brands in the country. That’s a lot of experience concentrated into our new agency.

Starting a new agency in a recession?! Are you a masochist or something?
Yes… I mean no… I mean yes. Apple Strudel!! (What’s the “or something”?)
A lot of people have asked us that question (the ‘setting up’ one, not whether we’re masochists). We think recessions are a good time to set up. For one thing, clients are actively looking for effective and efficient solutions and are willing to listen. For another, you can really keep your operation costs in check. If you can create an efficient business model that succeeds during a recession…well that’s a sure sign of a damn fine model.

If you had to choose - would you rather buy products that were made by child slave labour, or products that are made from illegal ivory poaching?
Hmmm, I know this is going to sound boringly PC, but I worked on a “Stop Child Labour” campaign for Concern a couple of years ago. And elephant’s are my favourite animal. So I’ll go for ‘C’ because an ad told me there is always a ‘C’ option. And ads don’t lie.

Radio advertising is like marmite. You love it or hate it, and normally it’s hate. What’s your view?

I love radio advertising (I hate marmite). I think radio is a very creative and impactful medium…when it’s used properly…which if we’re honest is seldom. You’ve heard the expression “Radio is the theatre of the mind”. Well most peoples minds’ don’t feature two people repeating a phone number back and forth, and I’m pretty sure glorified infomercials aren’t considered theatre. Advertising works best when you have a simple, singular idea. It has impact if that idea is executed with creativity and daring. It is not a competition to see how many words you can fit in 30seconds. This is as true for radio as it is for any other media. As a medium, radio is facing a huge number of challenges, from DAB to iTunes. There’s a constant battle to hold on to listeners, so increasing the creative quality of both the programming and the advertising is absolutely essential.

I Love the work we do and have full faith in the project… We’ve been fundraising in dribs and drabs, but with just a few quick votes we could secure a smashing bit of funding (2000euro and up to 5000 depending on the number of votes we get)

I know I’ve been looking for a few votes for things recently, but if you could vote for this that would be magic…….. I should find a novel way of presenting this “please vote” message, but I used up all me good ideas at the weekend, like “lets get into a wheelbarrow” or “lets selotape clocks to our t-shirts”…. That’s all gold (I’m sure you’ll agree), but it’s gone now……

To vote please text ANNESLEY B to 51303. Or click here, select Annesley Bridge Branch, and choose option B, the Irish Humour Foundation.

Every year - we pretty much tear down piehole and start again. Our first attempt looked something like …

We loved it but after a LOT of heated discussion, we upgraded the site. When I say ‘upgrade’, I mean ‘broke’ the site a lot in the hopes of moving to a new platform would help us make changes more easily. It took a lot of effort and afterwards we ended up with …

And today (TADA) we’ve finaly arrived at the Nirvana of websites - until we change it all again next year of course.

Of course there are still problems with the new design. Its classier. But classier and useful don’t always go together. What do you think? Give us your feedback? We’ll listen - honest

No we really will. Leave a comment. Let us know.

Hi - I just wanted to let you know about an Internet drama which I recently worked on called ‘Daily Strife’.It is being shown on the web as part of RTE’s ‘Storyland’ programme. How this works is that they show ‘Daily Strife on the RTE website at www.rte.ie/storyland along with four other films. The public can then vote and whoever gets the least vote doesn’t get to go on to make another episode. It’s all a little bit ‘Big Brother’ but I would really appreciate your support on this as I think that it’s a good strong piece of work and I would really like to work on it again!!! Anyway, to find out more about the film and to view a short trailer, visit http://www.dailystrife.com/ .
It goes live on 29th January. After which you’ll have a week to register your vote. Voting opens 5 feb. As Michael Collins might say, Vote Early and Vote Often! All and any support is much appreciated.

A lot of people wonder if they should try and get into voiceovers . There are expenses involved in doing so. You need a professional demo, maybe a home studio, ways of marketing yourself. They all take either time or money.

Unfortunately, if you don’t have the talent, it is all for nothing. You might be great at marketing yourself and have a cracking demo, but if you don’t have the raw talent, then your career may be short-lived.

That is where we come up. We’re offering free phone auditions. Call our number, do a demonstration read and we’ll tell you straight whether we think you have potential. It won’t cost you a cent and we’ll be brutally honest.

For Piehole VOs - if you have comps to any shows you’re doing, and would like to promote yourself and show off your acting talents, you can get the ad industry to go and watch you. We’re going to use the facebook group for that type of thing. So get your butt in there, it’s lonely without you.

Finally got the new website up and running. My buddy Ian Armstrong had put the original blurb up in 2001 but of course since then technology has gone sky high. I remember the audio quality and limits on the amount of samples you could put up was really frustrating on the 1st site, but you must remember, most of us were on the steam engine dial up system then.

Anyway; last January, talking rubbish over a few pints turned in to “ You really should update that site you know”, resulting in poor Ian nearly having a nervous breakdown as his friend suddenly turned into the client from hell!

But we got the design and content sorted and I began to regret the photo opportunities I had missed over the past 8 years – people I had in studio and never bothered to get the camera out, E.G. Alan Stanford, Joe Dolan, Brian McGuigan of McGuigan Wines, Derek Davis, Joe Deane, Pakie O’callaghan & Frank Toomey to mention a few. However, let there be no panic……………….the camera is now a permanent fixture in the studio and photos will be uploaded faster than you can say “Cheese”.

Check out the new site please, I’d love to get comments, suggestions, ideas, hate mail…
